Oktoberfest

It's that time of year again...time for our annual trip to Leavenworth (that's Washington, not Kansas) to drink beer and eat bratwurst! It's funny how some places define a season--it never seems like fall has officially started until we see the Icicle Mountain range and a bunch of drunk people in crazy hats. We made the trip this last weekend, which was Anna's first camping trip last year.

We got there late Thursday night, and headed into town on Friday with most of the crew--we were lucky to have our family friends Tom and Madonna visiting from California (who somehow managed to evade my camera), as well as my parents, Tim's parents, Jon and Shannathan (Tim's youngest brother and his better half), Kip and Kay AND Linda and Troy! Needless to say, we took up one entire corner of the campground.

In town there was much browsing and shopping, wine and cheese tasting and (of course) eating of delicious foods like portobello mushroom crepes, wasabi cheese, Irish stout cheese, cocoa covered almonds and other various wines and ales. Anna was absolutely fascinated by the Christmas store, who had a life-sized Santa hanging from the ceiling...mostly we think she was trying to figure out how that crazy guy got up there (meanwhile, Mom and Dad were mostly concerned that small paws would not come in contact with the many breakable items in their path). We finally couldn't shop or eat any more, so what to do? Go back to camp and have beer and brats of course!

The next day we hung around, played a rather competitive and feisty game of Aggravation (a family favorite), recovered from a Whiskey tasting contest that seemed like a good idea at the time, and then headed out to Icicle Ridge Winery to check out their advertised Fall Festival and wine tasting...complete with grape squashing. I for one sincerely hope that none of those grapes actually make it into the wine, but Shannathan and I had to try it just the same. (For your reference, it felt a lot like stepping on a barrel full of worms or little eyeballs that explode under your toes...gross at first, but something like a little foot spa after you get used to it ;o).

Anna *really* wanted to get in the grape barrel with us and got a little grumpy when she was denied access...twice! We learned not to mention the grapes unless we wanted her to break into a pout, even after Mom and Aunty Shannthan had long since dried off and moved on (hard to believe we're already having to spell stuff out to avoid this kid catching on!).

Afterwards, we swung by Smallwood Farms, which is a full service shop for fruits and veggies, gords galore, a petting zoo, llama and tractor rides and basically anything else those young in heart or tooth could want.

We picked up some harvest delectables, snapped a few pictures, then headed back to camp to...you guessed it...eat. Homemade chili, perfect for the increasingly cold day that eventually turned into a full blown wind storm that night. We were slightly worried that our tenters were going to blow away, but thankfully they made it (and so did the tent). Even so, getting camp packed up the next day was interesting in the wind, especially for the said tenters who had to simultaneously weigh down the tent and try to put it away.

It was slow going coming home with I-90 closed due to the wind/dust and pulling a travel trailer, so a 3 hour trip took us 7 hours! Regardless, we finally made it, had a great time and can now officially start Fall...and our diets. ;o)

"Mom, I am not a pumpkin. You aren't going to leave me here to get picked, are you?"
