After a somewhat adventurous, two day drive to get here (we had some creative weather, including strong gusts of wind, torrential rain, 100 miles of road construction, thunder/lightning and golf ball-sized hail on the first day), we made it completely in two pieces...one for Anna and one for me. ;o)
We spent yesterday recovering from the drive (read that "drinking wine"), but today the girls all got to play a bit and us Mom Girls decided to turn an unsuspecting pumpkin from the fair into pumpkin pie. If you've ever tried to make pumpkin pie from an actual pumpkin, you know it's not like popping open a can of Libby's (in fact, when you're done you will much appreciate Libby, whoever she was). But, I'm getting ahead of myself.
The girls played together (which you'll mostly have to take my word on, since we were too covered in pumpkin parts for too many pictures)....
And had so much fun playing that by the end of the day it was bathtime, which was mightily enjoyed by all. One moment in particular was enjoyed by us Moms when Anna (in all her two year old glory) told Gwennie, who was helpfully trying to wash Anna's hair: "Watch it baby girl....don't push it!". I'm honestly not sure where she gets these things.
Throughout the day, the pumpkination was underway. It began with the murder of said unsuspecting pumpkin...
Then we baked its brains (roasted them to perfection in fact)...After some experimentation in the art of pumpkin puree, and after consulting several pie cookbooks (the one authored in 1965 won, hands down, for its witty commentary), we ended up winging it and making 4 pies with two different recipes. I was in charge of the filling and Anne was in charge of the crusts. With a pinch here and a dash there, we ended up with this:

Sexy, no? And delicious with whipped cream (if we do say so ourselves). Amazingly light and fluffy, but delightfully pumpkiny and well worth the squash sacrifice. Mr. Miller pronounced it blue ribbon fair-worthy--unfortunately for us, the fair was LAST weekend, so we're either a week late or a year early, depending on your perspective. On the plus side, we still have a very large amount of pumpkin puree leftover, so don't be surprised if you see it pop up again in a later post in some form or another.
Finally, after a great day and much fun and pie, it was bedtime...

Stay tuned for more adventures in Millerland!

They sure are growing into little girls fast! Look at Gwen's hair!
That roasted pumpkin picture is really neat, too. Mmm, pie.
It sounds like so much fun. Can't wait for more of your witty writing to describe the rest of your adventures.
And your pumpkin pie pictures made me hungry.
I'm glad you all had fun! That pie looks delicious and like it was a ton of work! Do you think you will make another one from scratch any time soon? I have a recipe for yellow squash pie that tastes a lot like pumpkin, and is a lot easier, if you are interested!
